Charles Charges to Third ASCS Canyon Triumph in a Row!
Kevin Montgomery TUCSON, Arizona (May 15, 2010) - "Chargin'"
Charles Davis, Jr., reeled off his third American Sprint
Car Series Canyon Region feature win in a row by racing to
victory lane in Saturday night's 30-lap main event atop
the 3/8-mile USA Raceway clay oval.
The defending series champ worked forward from the seventh
starting position to take the win aboard the Roush Yates
Ford-powered Massey Motorsports No. 50 RSS for his 17th
career series triumph.
Moving into the lead in the final rounds, Davis, Jr., took
the checkered flag in front of Mike Martin, who rallied
from the 17th starting position for runner-up
honors after winning the "B" Main.
Seventeen-year-old Dalten Gabbard posted his top career
ASCS Canyon Region finish by claiming the show position,
with New York's Coleman Gulick charging from 16th
to fourth.
Pole starter Brandon Lane rounded out the top five, with
Stevie Sussex, 18th-starter Thomas Ogle, Nathan
High, 20th-starter Ronnie Clark and Bruce St.
James completing the top ten.
Seainn Hendricsen, R.J. Johnson, Davis, Jr., and Nick
Aiuto topped heat race action for Saturday night's 28-car
field, with Martin winning the "B" Main. Johnson led the
way in the main event from the front row outside starting
position before forced pitside with engine woes.
Rick Ziehl flipped in heat race action and scratched for
the night, with Brian Hosford getting upside down in "A"
Main action.
The Casa Grande Bullet, Bo Partain, took advantage of a
late race restart putting the BG Chemicals 75 in victory
lane by winning the action packed 20-Lap SCRA Factory
Stock Feature. Partain, who has 2 USA Factory Stock
victories this year, added a third feature winner sticker
to his ride, his first in SCRA competition. The "Bullet"
was joined in victory lane by Matt Martinez who finished
2nd, Joey Mccullough finishing 3rd and a whole cast of
competitors all stopping to congratulate him on his win,
in fact, one competitor even carried Partain's trophy home
for him.
Todd Updyke launched into his first X-Mod victory by using
a very fast upper groove as he drove around the
competition making his way from a 12th starting
position to win the 20-Lap feature. Updyke was followed
by Ricky Mcguire who gained ground on 4th place
finisher and point's leader Ted Robinson. Mike Brandon
completed the top three as took the show position in his
first X-Mod outing.
Kyle Shipley beat Dustin Cormany and Dylan Cappello in a
very fast 20-Lap Arizona Modified Midget feature. Josh
Shipley, who settled for 4th due to a bad case
of wheel hops, crossed the line ahead of Ty Michoko
rounding out the fab five.
Jason Jensen bagged his second career Commanders vs.
Chiefs Hornet Championship as he drove the John Callans
owned machine to victory. Jensen also captured the
inaugural 2009 race in a Callans car. The win would not
come without some controversy as "Bagger" took out talk
show host Jon Justice in the final laps of the 10-Lap
feature event.
