San Felipe, NM (May 20th, 2009) -The final act in Hollywood
Hills Speedway history will play out this weekend as the Discount Tire Co. ASCS
Canyon Region takes to the semi-banked, 3/8-mile clay oval in San Felipe Pueblo,
NM for the 30th Annual Buddy Taylor Memorial.
"Hollywood" Johnny Herrera will make his way home to take on the Stars of the
ASCS Sprint Cars led by "Chargin" Charles Davis. The wingless forces of the
ASCS Canyon Region will battle it out on both Saturday and Sunday night, with
Sunday night's feature winner pocketing $2,500.
The Battle of New Mexico vs. Arizona will take place for what appears to be
final time on New Mexico soil. Herrera will add Rick Zeihl, Derik Ortega,
Joshua Hodges, Colt Treharn, Kelly Denison, Scott Box, Jesse Baker and Jon
Taylor to take on the Arizona sprint stars. Davis will lead the charge from the
west with Nathan High, RJ Johnson, Andy Reinbold, Jonathon Henry, Stevie Sussex,
Ronnie Clark and Mike Martin. The epic battle will mark the first time the best
from New Mexico will have the chance to take on Arizona on their home turf.
With the opening three events of the season in the books, Charles Davis, Jr., of
Buckeye, AZ, is out to the early lead in Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region
points, holding an 18-point advantage over Nathan High with R.J. Johnson, Andrew
Reinbold and Jonathon Henry rounding out the current top five.
Yuma's Mike Martin, a title contender with both the ASCS Canyon and ASCS
Southwest Region, tuned up for this weekend's Buddy Taylor Memorial by besting a
field of 30-plus entries at Hollywood Hills on April 25.
The weekend also marks the opening two legs of the Discount Tire Co. ASCS Wing
vs. Non-Wing Challenge Series, a selected slate of eight events including both
the wingless ASCS Canyon Region and the winged ASCS Southwest Region.
The AMRA/RMMRA Midgets will be in action in a tri state challenge. Keith Rauch,
fresh off an I-76 victory, leads the cast of Rocky Mountain Midgets. RJ Johnson
joins Nathan high to represent the Arizona Midgets and The Father son duo of
Robert and Michael Marfia will represent New Mexico.
The New Mexico mini sprints will round out the open wheel trio for the Memorial
Day Double Header.
This weekend's action will also bring the final curtain down on Hollywood Hills
Speedway as the facility will be closed due to unsafe conditions of the masonry
structures at the track.
A huge display of open wheel racing is set to take center stage as drivers from
Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado all make their way to
Hollywood Hills Speedway in search of stardom. General admission tickets will
go on sale at 5pm for only $15, racing will begin promptly at 7pm.
